NAUGATUCK — The cause of a fire Saturday at a gas station on North Main Street appears accidental, but it remains under investigation.

Firefighters and police officers responded to a structure fire at Cumberland Farms, 527 North Main St., shortly before 7 p.m. When first responders arrived on the scene, the rear of the building was on fire.

Deputy Fire Marshal Ned Dalton said firefighters extinguished the worst of the blaze within 15 minutes. He said there were hotspots in the roof that required extra time to make sure the fire wouldn’t flare up again. Firefighters cut away parts of the roof, he said.

No injuries were reported, Dalton said.

Dalton said the fire department cleared the store to reopen to sell gas, cigarettes and lottery tickets Saturday night. The store will have to get clearance from the Naugatuck Valley Health District before food can be sold again, he said.

Dalton said the cause of the blaze appears accidental, but it is still under investigation.
