NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck Public Schools received an additional $711,427 in its Alliance Grant this fiscal year.

The Alliance Grant is state funding that is targeted for Connecticut’s lowest-performing school districts. The additional funds brought Naugatuck’s grant allocation to a little more than $2 million for the 2019-20 fiscal year.

The Board of Education uses the grant to fund a variety of items, including staff, developing curriculum and professional development. The majority of this year’s grant is used to pay for existing personnel and programs, including school counselors, reading and math consultants, and instructional coaches.

The school board plans to use the increase in its grant to hire an assistant principal for Maple Hill Elementary School, an administrative intern for Hop Brook Elementary School and a new English language learner teacher.

The enrollment at Maple Hill is over 500 students and it’s the largest elementary school in Naugatuck. The new assistant principal, which is a first for an elementary school in Naugatuck, will help support and evaluate teachers, and help ensure the safety of students during arrival, dismissal and lunch, according to the school district.

The administrative intern at Hop Brook will help develop talent internally, according to the school district, while the additional English language learner teacher will assist with an increase of 57 English language learner students this year.
