WATERBURY — The Town Plot Neighborhood Association will honor Naugatuck police Det. Andre Moutela this month with its Good Neighbor Award for his role in saving a suicidal teenager in August.

The teenager was threatening suicide on the Highland Avenue bridge, which spans Interstate 84, on Aug. 7. When negotiators learned the teen spoke only Portuguese, they called the Naugatuck Police Department. Moutela, who is one of several Portuguese-fluent officers on the force, responded to the scene to communicate with the teenager.

After about 45 minutes, officers were able to pull the teenager to safety.

The Town Plot Neighborhood Association will officially present the Good Neighbor Award, which is given annually to a person that has contributed to the wellbeing of the community, at The Waterbury Neighborhood Council’s annual award dinner Oct. 24 at La Bella Vista, 380 Farmwood Road. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person. For information or tickets, call Art Denze at 203-755-5761.
