NAUGATUCK — A woman was taken to a hospital and two people were displaced from their home after a fire in an apartment complex on Spring Street Thursday night.

Emergency officials responded to a structure fire at 461 Spring St. at about 8:45 p.m.

Officials evacuated the complex as a precaution, Fire Chief Ellen Murray said. Two people who were inside the unit that caught fire escaped on their own by the time firefighters arrived.

Murray said the flames were knocked down quickly and contained to a bedroom.

“I’d say we made a very aggressive interior attack, put the fire out within 10 minutes and kept it in one room of the place or origin, saving the rest of the apartment and building,” Murray said.

One of the two occupants was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital for smoke inhalation. She and the other occupant were both displaced and are under the care of family, Murray said.

Murray said there was significant damage inside the apartment where the fire started but no other apartments were impacted.

Police closed Spring Street for about an hour.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
