Change made to sixth-grade schedule

PROSPECT — Administrators have slightly changed the schedule for sixth-grade students at Long River Middle School.

Previously, sixth-graders had four core classes — language arts, science, social studies and math — and an “academy” period that covered topics like Google apps, public speaking and organizational skills each day.

Michele Raynor, Region 16’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessments, said teachers found that many of the topics covered in the academy course are embedded within the core classes.

Instead of having the academy course every day, students will only have it on Fridays starting in the 2019-20 school year, which begins Aug. 26. Students will have two periods of one of the four core classes the other four days. Periods are 50 minutes long.

Officials said the change gives students more time to get support from teachers in the core classes.
