NAUGATUCK — A Seymour man was arrested Friday after a news crew in the borough to do a story on illegal dumping allegedly saw him dump garbage down a bank on the Naugatuck River.
At about 4 p.m. Friday a news crew from WFSB contacted police to report they saw the man, identified as Philip Donofrio, 42, of 23 Holbrook Road, Seymour, throw household items down the embankment toward the river.
“Footage of this incident was submitted to Naugatuck Police, who identified the suspect from a Home Depot truck rental,” police said in a news release.
When police caught up with Donofrio, they found him in possession of heroin, according to the release.
Donofrio was charged with littering on public land and possession of a controlled substance. He posted $1,000 bond and is due to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on July 31.
“We thank the public for their assistance in protecting this sensitive area of the Naugatuck River,” police said in the release. “The Naugatuck Police Department remains receptive to feedback on ways in which we can continue to help make our community cleaner and safer together.”
