NAUGATUCK — The Board of Mayor and Burgesses last week approved a $3,600 payment to Waterbury to help fund the Naugatuck River Brigade.

The brigade is made of local teenagers who clean up the Naugatuck River and learn about the environment under the guidance of Naugatuck River Revival Group founder Kevin Zak, a Naugatuck resident.

Waterbury formed the brigade last year in response to a 5 million gallon raw sewage spill in the Naugatuck River that happened in October 2017. The Waterbury Police Activity League (PAL) oversees the program.

There are two Naugatuck teens on the brigade this year, and the money approved last week will pay for their stipends, officials said.
