NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Police Department is looking for a few good officers and hoping to attract them with an outreach event.

There are three immediate openings for patrol officers at the department, and officials anticipate a few more in the near future with some officers becoming eligible for retirement, said Lt. C. Colin McAllister, the public information officer for the department.

To help broaden the pool of potential candidates, the department is inviting anyone interested in becoming an officer to an outreach event on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the department, 211 Spring St.

Naugatuck police personnel will be on hand during the event to answer any questions about the process of becoming a police officer and what it’s like to be a Naugatuck police officer.

McAllister said the department is hoping to drum up interest, especially within the borough community, in the positions. He said the event is also a way to take the mystery out of what it takes to be a police officer and to make people who may be uncertain about applying more comfortable.

There are several requirements to become an officer. Applicants must be 21 years old at the time of appointment, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or GED, have a valid driver’s license, and pass a physical agility test and background check.

The deadline to apply for the Naugatuck positions is April 19. For information, email npdbackgrounds@naugatuckpd.org.
