BEACON FALLS — For Elizabeth “Betty” Montefusco, volunteering is a family trait and a way of life.

“I had a mom and dad who were always willing to lend a hand. I just followed in their footsteps,” Montefusco said. “It is just part of my nature. It’s part of who I am.”

Montefusco, 63, of Beacon Falls, will receive the Caring Heart Award at the 14th Annual Women’s Heart Wellness Caring Heart Award Ceremony this month.

The award is given out by Griffin Hospital’s Women’s Heart Wellness Committee and recognizes individuals who promote and improve the general health and wellbeing of all.

Montefusco works as the executive administrative assist to the vice president of patient care services and manages the nursing administration office at Griffin Hospital in Derby

Montefusco volunteers her time at the hospital and throughout the community.

According to a news release, Montefusco is the chairperson of the Griffin Recreation, Entertainment & Arts Team, which organizes events for Griffin staff and their families. She is an elected member of the Parish Council at Assumption Church in Ansonia, where she serves as a Eucharistic Minister. She is also called upon to administer the sacrament to hospital patients when needed.

Montefusco also volunteers as a Spooner House Team Captain, organizing and cooking meals for the residents of the homeless shelter in Shelton.

Montefusco has volunteered with a lot of organizations over the years, including organizing a food drive for the St. Vincent DePaul in Derby, making necessity bags for the homeless through the Brian O’Connell Homeless Project, and making baby blankets for cribs that were donated by the Knights of Columbus.

Montefusco said she was honored to receive the award.

“I am so humbled. It’s just such an honor to be recognized for my volunteer work in the community,” Montefusco said.
