NAUGATUCK — The borough will honor Al White as Naugatuck’s Earth Day Mayor for the Day during a ceremony on Saturday.

The ceremony starts at 10 a.m. at Gunntown Passive Park and Nature Preserve on Gunntown Road.

White is being honored for his continuous educational work and research on butterflies and moths at Gunntown Passive Park and Nature Preserve.

White has recently been working toward establishing a Monarch way station designation for the Gunntown Nature Preserve to help increase the number of Monarch butterflies, a news release stated. He also worked with a Naugatuck High School student intern to remove invasive plants at the Gunntown Nature Preserve. He has also led annual walks sponsored by the Park and Recreation Department for the last six years.

The Conservation Commission will also honor Joe Pernek with an award of appreciation during the ceremony for his efforts to pick up debris and litter from sidewalks and streets in Naugatuck. The commission is recognizing Pernek for taking the initiative and caring about a clean environment.
