NAUGATUCK — An early morning fire Monday caused significant damage to a home on Park Avenue.

Firefighters responded to a fire at 88 Park Ave. at about 5:30 a.m., Capt. Thomas Moore said. A neighbor reported the fire, he said, saying flames were visible at the house.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, Moore said, there was heavy fire coming from the back of the house. Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly, he said.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured putting out the fire, Moore said.

Moore said firefighters contained the fire to the first floor of the two-story home. The first floor suffered significant fire damage, he said, while there was smoke and heat damage on the second floor.

Waterbury Fire Department provided mutual aid on the scene to help ventilate the house, Moore said.

The home is owned by Peter C. Sumpf, according to the property card.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
