NAUGATUCK — A one-car crash on Cherry Street early Saturday morning caused a minor fire at the building that houses Mario’s Pizzeria.
The accident occurred at about 2:05 a.m. Police said Timothy Chapman, 27, was driving a Toyota Scion south on Cherry Street when the car didn’t make a curve in the road and crashed into with a guide wire and utility pole.
The crashed damaged the pole, causing live wires to fall on the multi-use building at 123 Cherry St. and ignite the fire. The incident resulted in the closure of the road, an evacuation of surrounding buildings and loss of power in the area, police said.
Eversource utility crews responded to the scene on Saturday to replace the pole, restore power and repair damage.
Fire Capt. Tom Moore said there was no significant damage to Mario’s Pizzeria or the apartment housed on the floor above it, and no one was displaced.
A sign posted outside Mario’s Pizzeria on Monday afternoon said the pizzeria is temporarily closed for repairs and will reopen soon.
Chapman was evaluated at the hospital for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. There were no other reported injuries. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, police said.
