New roof coming for City Hill Middle School

NAUGATUCK — Borough officials are moving forward with a project to replace the roof at City Hill Middle School.

The school was built in 1972, and the roof was last replaced when a new wing was added on in 1988.

Last year, the borough repaired a section of the 55,000-square-foot roof after water began leaking into the gymnasium.

“So it is time we get this roof replaced,” Purchasing and Financial Analyst Robert Butler told the Board of Mayor and Burgesses during a special meeting Dec. 18.

According to the educational specification for the roof project, which was done by the Hamden-based architectural firm Silver/Petrucelli and Associates, there are a number of smaller leaks in the roof and, if it is not replaced soon, there could be damage to the decking of the roof and the interior of the building.

The plan calls for the entire roof, down to the metal decking, to be removed and replaced. During that time, all of the materials removed, including the roofing and caulking, will be tested for remnants of asbestos.

The work is expected to be done during the summer while the children are not in school.

Butler said replacing the roof is estimated to cost $1.3 million. The final figure won’t be known until bids come back on the work. The money will come out of the borough’s five-year capital fund, he said.

Officials anticipate the state will reimburse the borough 75 percent of the cost of the project.

The Board of Education approved the educational specification for the project earlier this month.

Last week, the Board of Mayor and Burgesses approved the schematic drawings for the project, applying for state reimbursement and putting the job out to bid.

Butler said all of the borough’s schools will have newer roofs once City Hill’s roof is replaced.

“It is the last roof in the group of schools that hasn’t had its roof addressed in the last 10 years,” Butler said.
