NAUGATUCK — The state Department of Transportation announced that the Route 68 bridge is scheduled to be closed this weekend.

The bridge, which connects Bridge Street to Prospect Street, is scheduled to close at 8 p.m. on Friday and remain closed through 5 a.m. Monday, the DOT stated in a press release. The bridge could re-open earlier if the work scheduled is completed early.

The detour route in the eastbound direction runs from Route 63 south to Route 8, then north to Exit 28. In the westbound direction, it runs from Route 8 south to Exit 26 to Route 63 north.

The project consists of bridge rehabilitation, including replacement of the concrete bridge beams with high-strength weathering steel and the existing concrete deck, along with reconstruction of the bridge seat at both abutments, reconstruction of wing walls and repairs to the five piers.

James Zaharevich, a project engineer with the DOT, said the bridge will be closed so the top layer of pavement can be put down. Once line striping, final guiderail and fencing, and miscellaneous items are complete, the DOT anticipates the bridge will be open with two lanes in each direction around the end of September, he said.
