PROSPECT — The Planning and Zoning Commission last week approved extending the hours the Prospect Gun Club can operate its shooting range.

The shooting range is located at 221 Cheshire Road, which is near the Prospect VFW Post 8075 and the Department of Public Works garage.

Prior to the approval, the range was open 4 to 6 p.m., or half an hour before sunset, on Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., or half an hour before sunset, on Saturdays, 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Sundays, and 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Under the new hours, the club is allowed to operate the range from 4 to 7 p.m., or half an hour before sunset, on Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., or half an hour before sunset, on Saturdays, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sundays during the winter months, and 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving, Labor Day and Memorial Day.

This is the second time in the past few years that the gun club came before the commission to expand the hours at the range.

In 2015, the club requested to add hours on Thursdays and the Friday after Thanksgiving. The commission required the club to make improvements at the range, like installing sound suppression material, before approving the additional hours.

The club met the requirements in 2017, Land Use Inspector Mary Barton said.
