NAUGATUCK — The Board of Mayor and Burgesses last week approved an ordinance banning the waste from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, from being stored in the borough.

The ordinance also bans the use of fracking waste as an ingredient in asphalt for repaving roads.

Supporters of the ban previously said fracking waste could leech chemicals, such as oil, heavy metals, and brine, into groundwater.

Fracking is a process where pressurized liquid is sprayed into a well to fracture rock and ground in order to make oil and natural gas more accessible.

The state has a moratorium on accepting fracking waste, but the legislature didn’t vote on banning the waste during its session that ended in May.
