PROSPECT — As Miss Southbury, Prospect’s Micayla Barrows relishes serving as a role model to the community as she wears her crown and sash.

“Being a role model means being the person who is looked at by others as an example to be imitated,” Barrows said. “With that, a titleholder is expected to stay sophisticated yet show their personality and style through their wardrobe. A lot of little girls look up to us as princesses and that means whatever we do, they’re going to want to do as well, so our actions, our personality, and our clothes all tie into being that ‘role model’ figure.”

Barrows, a senior at Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls, is competing for the opportunity to be the next Miss Connecticut. If she wins, she will compete for the opportunity to be Miss America in Atlantic City, N.J. this September.

“In my opinion, wearing the crown and sash doesn’t only represent the town you stand for and the Four Points (of the crown for the Miss America Organization — scholarship, success, style, and service) you’ve committed to follow, but it also means you are a princess in the eyes of young kids,” Barrows said. “It’s every girl’s dream to wear a crown, so seeing the eyes of these little girls light up while they are filled with excitement because they just saw a princess, is my absolute favorite part about wearing the crown and sash.”

Barrows added, “I feel incredibly honored to stand as a role model and to represent such a strong female role in the eyes of others.”

The Miss Connecticut Scholarship pageant preliminaries are June 8 at 7 p.m. The finals are June 9 at 7 p.m. at The Palace Theater, 100 East Main St., Waterbury.
