PROSPECT — A 52-year-old man pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to participating in a bribery scheme involving a $21 million project in Stamford, according to federal authorities.
Michael Uszakiewicz, the owner of K&M Fire Protection in Southington, paid bribes to Javed Choudhry, an employee of a Stamford-based construction company, authorities say.
Uszakiewicz and other contractors paid between $250,000 and $500,000 to Choudhry in exchange for millions of dollars in contracts on construction projects, according to documents.
Uszakiewicz waived indictment and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He is scheduled to be sentenced in Hartford on July 9 and faces up to 20 years in prison.
As part of a plea deal, Uszakiewicz agreed to forfeit $1,121,106 that was seized from his bank accounts. He is out on a $100,000 bond.
In January, Kevin Dunn, president of Delmar Electrical Contractors in Watertown, admitted that he also paid bribes to Choudhry. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Choudhry pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and filing a false tax return in May 2017.
Choudhry and Dunn both await sentencing.
The FBI and the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS conducted the investigation.
