NAUGATUCK — Maple Hill Elementary School was placed in lockdown for precautionary measures Wednesday afternoon after police received complaints of gunshots heard in the area of Longview Terrace.

Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Bryan Cammarata said police received a complaint at about 12:10 p.m. of gunshots heard in the area of Longview Terrace near land owned by the Connecticut Water Co.

A resident that lives next to the water company’s property told police an individual was hunting. The resident told police the person was briefly seen wearing camouflage.

Maple Hill is near the water company’s land. Due to the nature of the call, the school was contacted and placed in lockdown as a precautionary measure as police investigated, Cammarata said.

Police weren’t able to find the person during a search of the area. Based on the search, Cammarata said, it was determined there was no threat to Maple Hill and the lockdown was lifted at about 1:15 p.m.

Officers remained on scene at Maple Hill the rest of the school day.

Cammarata said it’s illegal to hunt on the water company’s land in the area where the incident was reported. The incident remains under investigation.
