NAUGATUCK — Elizabeth “Betty” Sousa, 84, the widow of John R. Sousa, Sr., died peacefully on Feb. 20, 2018 at The Village at East Farms.

Betty was born on April 28, 1933 in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Krankota) Manthey, and graduated from Leavenworth High School. Betty lived in Naugatuck for most of her life and worked with her family at J and A Oil Service. Betty was a parishioner of St. Vincent Ferrer Church.

Betty is survived by her sons, John R. Sousa, Jr. of Naugatuck, Mark Sousa and his wife, Joyce, of Thomaston; her son-in-law, Preston Hurst of Lakeland, Fla.; her beloved grandchildren, Brian Sousa, Jonathan Hurst, Brianne Sousa and Colin Sousa; her sisters, Mary Secula of Wolcott and Roberta SantaMaria and her husband, Sal, of Waterbury; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, Betty was predeceased by her daughter, Diane Hurst; her grandson, Justin Damiano; and her sisters, Eleanor O’Connell and Arline SantaMaria.

Betty’s family would like to thank the staff at The Village at East Farms and at VITAS Hospice for the excellent care that they provided.

Calling hours are Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck. A Memorial Mass and burial will be held privately at a later date.
