NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck school district’s security guards are now part of a union.

On Jan. 11, the Board of Education approved a memorandum of agreement between the board and AFSCME Local 1813 that added the district’s security guards to the union.

Previously, security guards weren’t part of a union. Local 1813 also covers cafeteria, custodial, maintenance, secretarial and paraprofessional employees.

Under the agreement, security guards will receive 2.5 percent raises, retroactive to July 1, 2017.

The agreement states that, during 2018, the security guards will pay an 11 percent premium share contribution towards their medical premium costs.

The current contract that Local 1813 is operating under runs through June 30, 2018.

According to the memorandum of agreement, any concurrent contract that is negotiated between the borough and the union will include the security guards.
