REGION 16 — The Region 16 Board of Education last week agreed to waive the bid process in order to move ahead with replacing corroded sprinkler pipes and fittings at two schools.
The board, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, also approved spending up to $80,000 to replace the rotting pipes at Woodland Regional High School and Long River Middle School.
“This needs to be done before we lose a pipe somewhere,” board Chair Robert Hiscox said.
The board hired MJ Daly of Waterbury to do the work. MJ Daly inspected the pipes at the schools free of charge in November. The inspection found 110 corroded areas at Woodland and 143 areas at Long River.
The issue was discovered last May when a pipe in Woodland’s media center started leaking. Between June 6 and Oct. 9 of last year, the region spent $18,313 for emergency repairs to fix seven different sections of pipes at the school because they were rusting, and some were leaking.
