BEACON FALLS — A woman was struck and killed by a train on the Waterbury Branch of the Metro-North Railroad Wednesday morning.

Beacon Hose Company No. 1 Chief Brian DeGeorge said the woman was hit near the entrance to the Naugatuck State Forest near Railroad Avenue and Cold Spring Road at about 8:45 a.m. He said the woman died as a result of the crash.

DeGeorge said the company responded to the scene, but the scene was quickly turned over to the Metro Transit Authority.

Metro-North spokeswoman Nancy Gamerman said the woman was on the tracks when she was hit by a northbound train due into Waterbury at 8:57 a.m. The woman, whose identity hasn’t been released yet, wasn’t authorized to be on the tracks, she said.

Gamerman said the woman walked onto the tracks along Cold Spring Road near the parking lot for the Naugatuck State Forest.

At the time of the accident the train had about 35 passengers on it, Gamerman said. The passengers were taken by bus to the Naugatuck and Waterbury train stations, she said.

Metro-North used substitute bus service for hours after the accident.

Gamerman said the accident is still under investigation.
