Letter: Federal government’s reach should be restrained

To the editor,

With the tax reform being debated I suggest that there are some things that are being overlooked.

A primary objection is that there will not be enough money for the government to fulfill all its commitments. Therein lies the problem. When our government was formed as a republic it consisted of 13 states with a federal government to provide two functions. It was to unite us in defense against foreign invaders and to resolve disputes between the states. And nothing more.

Where we have gone from there is strictly leading us down the wrong road. As notable examples, the federal government should never have been involved in welfare or education. We have to somehow restrain those ever expanding efforts.
