NAUGATUCK — The Zoning Commission will hold public hearings in January on granting one-year extensions for two special permits.

Both public hearings are set for the commission’s Jan. 17 meeting.

Vinny’s Restaurant and Pizza owners Remzi and Vesel Nasufi are seeking an extension on a special permit for a proposed gas station and convenience store at 42-46 Prospect St. and 0 Golden Hill Road, where the restaurant is now.

The commission originally approved the plan for the gas station in 2014. It approved changes to the plan, including shrinking the size of the convenience store from 4,500 square feet to 3,000 square feet, in September.

Attorney Michael McVerry, who represents the Nasufis, told the commission last week the need for an extension was economically driven.

“We received approval for a gasoline station and convenience store on site. Unfortunately, based on the very stagnant economy, they have not been able to proceed with that,” McVerry said.

The commission will also hold a public hearing on granting an extension on a special permit to build athletic fields on a 7.3-acre parcel of property at the Apple Hill Estates subdivision.

The borough originally accepted the open space in January 2016 in order to build full-sized baseball and soccer fields with lights on the land off of Osborn Road and Wisteria Drive.

The commission approved the plan in March 2016.

According to Town Planner Lori Rotella, the borough has started work there, but it has not completed it.
