NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Green will be decorated with purple lights this month to raise awareness of Epilepsy.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month, and decorating the Green is among initiatives by the Epilepsy Foundation of Connecticut to raise awareness of the neurological disorder, a press release stated.

Vincent Siefert, president of Siefert Associates in Naugatuck, and his family requested that Naugatuck light up the Green with purple lights, the release stated. Siefert’s daughter, Angie, suffers near daily seizures caused by epilepsy, the release stated. She underwent brain surgery to try to control her seizures, but the procedure didn’t provide the hoped for outcome.

“Now we are faced with possibly more surgery and new treatment options,” Siefert stated in the release. “The uncertainty of when and where the next seizure may occur has a dramatic impact on the lives of all people living with epilepsy and their loved ones. More attention and money needs to be dedicated to epilepsy research and the acceleration of new therapies.”

“It is essential we talk openly about epilepsy to help eliminate the public stigma that has caused misunderstanding, has created fear and has diverted attention and funds away from finding new therapies and cures,” he added.
