Obituary: Anna J. Verbyla

NAUGATUCK — Anna J. Verbyla, 97, of Naugatuck, died Oct. 17, 2017 at Watertown Convalarium. She was the widow of Victor J. Verbyla.

Anna was born in Naugatuck on Dec. 14, 1919, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Dutkowska) Sterniak. A lifelong resident, she worked as a laborer in the Footwear Division of Uniroyal, Inc. She joined the Naugatuck Senior Center and became president of the Senior Women’s Friendship Club for eight years. She was a member of the Red Hatters and served on the board of the A.A.R.P. She enjoyed traveling, both with the A.A.R.P. and twice with her daughter and family to Poland, where she found her parents birthplace.

Anna loved to spend time with her family and was especially proud of all her grandchildren. She cherished each one.

Anna is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Roberta Verbyla of Unionville,; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and William Lutkus of Watertown; grandchildren, Tracy Powers and Kimberly Verbyla, Matthew Verbyla and his wife, Wendy, Katherine and Allison Verbyla, Mary and Jeffrey Lutkus; great-grandchildren, Andrew Palmisano and Mateo Verbyla; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Donald Verbyla; brothers, Frank and Edmund Sterniak; and her sister, Hedwig Kalvaitis.

Anna’s family would like to thank the staff of Watertown Convalarium for the exceptional care she received during her stay, and to Maggie, her primary caretaker and dear friend.

Funeral will leave the Naugatuck Valley Memorial Fitzgerald- Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck, Saturday, Oct. 28 at 9:30 a.m. for St. Mary’s Church for Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
