To the editor,

The success of our schools is a key component for the success of our towns. For the past 17 years, I have been a dedicated educator within Region 16 schools, and am also a Region 16 parent of two children who have grown up educated within the district. Anyone who knows me understands that I only want what is best for our schools, and with that in mind I am writing in support of two Board of Education candidates: Andrea Sutton and Jim Barbarito.

I have known Andrea Sutton for nine years, since our sons shared the same second grade class. Andrea has consistently proved commitment in adding to school enrichment for our students through her involvement in several capacities. These include: serving as both vice president and treasurer in Algonquin/Community’s PTO, being a six-year chairperson for Junior Achievement, the enrichment coordinator for Algonquin and Community schools, and most recently serving on the committee that brought new finance literacy courses to Long River Middle School. Andrea’s level of involvement speaks for itself and I know my, as well as many of Region 16 children, have benefitted from her work. Beyond her volunteer services, I know Andrea to be extremely intelligent, witty and passionate about moving all our children’s education forward in the 21st century. She is not afraid to be vocal regarding what is best for the students of Region 16. Let’s continue allowing Andrea to work for our children by voting her into the Region 16 Board of Education.

Jim Barbarito is a steadfast member of our Prospect community who has dedicated many volunteer years to coaching Prospect town soccer and basketball. Jim has several special sets of skills and his insights would benefit our Board of Education. Equivalent to two master’s degrees, Jim holds a 6th year degree in education, an administrator’s certificate in education, a master’s degree in accounting and currently works as a public school math teacher. As recently reported in the Oct. 20 edition of Citizen’s News, Woodland Regional High School has implemented a math lab with the goal of improving students’ math skills and the district’s SAT scores. Jim’s unique experience provides invaluable understandings that he can draw upon to help Region 16 continue to improve its progress in mathematics and other areas. As a devoted parent, coach and educator Jim will bring much to the table serving on the Board of Education.

Both Andrea and Jim are invested in maintaining Region 16’s strive toward excellence.  Regardless of party lines, consider voting for these two upstanding candidates based on their past records of accomplishments and skill. I vehemently trust that both Andrea and Jim are the right choices for Region 16’s Board of Education.
