NAUGATUCK — The borough upgraded a part-time custodian position to full-time to take on the additional tasks of taking care of the former General DataComm building and armory.

The borough recently acquired both buildings. The General DataComm building is being used as an event center and the armory is being used by Naugatuck Youth Services.

Mayor N. Warren “Pete” Hess said the upgrade was necessary because the custodian was regularly working more than 32 hours per week, which entitles him to full-time benefits.

“If we don’t give him the benefits, we could be penalized,” Hess said. “It’s needed and he’s doing the work and a great job.”

The non-union position earns minimum wage.
