NAUGATUCK — The Board of Mayor and Burgesses last week awarded a $423,914 contract to Complete Construction Company out of Ansonia to pave a portion of Spring Street.

A roughly 0.7-mile stretch of the road from near the Naugatuck Police Department to the Waterbury town line will be paved. The project will be completely funded with money from the state’s Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program, according to officials.

Despite the state’s budget issues, Mayor N. Warren “Pete” Hess said the funds are guaranteed to be available since it is a federally-funded program.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The borough is investing heavily in road repairs. In August, the board approved a four-year, multi-million dollar effort to improve roads.

The plan included about $2 million to pave about 40 streets this year. Last week, the board amended the plan a bit.

Eight of the streets in the original plan won’t be ready to be paved this year, Public Works Director James Stewart said.

More drainage work is needed on Buckingham and Beecher streets, Stewart said. The borough is waiting for Yankee Gas to finish some work before the other six streets — Scott Street, Brookside Avenue, North Circle, South Circle, Melbourne Street and Arch Street — can be paved, he said.

The plan is to work on these streets in the spring, Stewart said.

In lieu of those eight streets, the borough will pave Webb Road, Jones Road, Allerton Road, Nichols Road, Crofut Road and King Street, Stewart said.

“They do desperately need it,” Stewart said. “This way we can keep on track and get the amount of paving we planned to do done and try to keep on schedule.”

Deputy Mayor Robert Neth said it’s important for the public to know the borough is investing in repairing roads.

“It’s something that has been done only a little at a time, and this year we are doing a lot,” Neth said.
