REGION 16 — An increase in student enrollment led to the addition of a kindergarten and fourth-grade teacher in Region 16, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect.

The kindergarten teacher was added at Prospect Elementary School, which brings the school to five kindergarten classes with about 18 students in each. The fourth-grade teacher was added at Laurel Ledge Elementary School, which brings the school to three fourth-grade classrooms with about 19 students in each.

The Board of Education last week approved transferring $147,642 from projected savings in the special education budget to cover the cost of the new certified positions. The savings are due to not having to pay for two special education students that were expected to be placed in schools out of the district. One student moved out of Region 16, and the other is returning to a school within the district, Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin said.

The board also approved transferring $100,000 to its contingency account. The bulk of this transfer comes from savings due to a change in the district’s insurance coverage, Yamin said.
