NAUGATUCK — All students at Andrew Avenue Elementary School and Salem Elementary School will receive breakfast and lunch at no charge this coming school year because the school district is participating in the Community Eligibility Provision, which is part of the National School Lunch Program.

The families of students at the two schools don’t need to apply to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price meals, a press release stated.

The provision is “a non-pricing meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website states. Schools that adopt the provision are reimbursed using a formula based on the percentage of students categorically eligible for free meals based on their participation in other specific means-tested programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the website states.
