NAUGATUCK — The Route 68 bridge is scheduled to be closed this weekend to accommodate ongoing construction, the state Department of Transportation announced.

The bridge, which connects Bridge Street to Prospect Street, is scheduled to be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday, the DOT stated in a press release. The bridge could reopen earlier than Monday morning, and the DOT referred residents to the “Bridge Status” link on the Naugatuck Police Department’s website, www.naugatuckpd.org, for updates.

Mayor N. Warren “Pete” Hess said the bridge will be open on Sunday, which is when the Naugatuck Chamber of Commerce is holding its annual Duck Day and Race downtown.

The bridge is undergoing an extensive $12.8 million rehabilitation project. The work is expected to continue until November 2018.

The detour route provided by the DOT for travelers on Route 68 east is: follow Route 63, south to Route 8, north to exit 28 to Route 68 east. For those driving on Route 68 west the route is: follow Route 8, south to exit 26 to Route 63, north to Route 68 west.
