NAUGATUCK — The Whittemore Library recently received a $1,490 grant from the Connecticut Community Foundation to support the purchase of toys for an early childhood program.

Bee Playful, the library’s preschool project, meets weekly and introduces and supports pre-literacy skills through play. It serves families with children from six months to 3 years of age.

“The Whittemore Library provides pre-literacy programming for infants and toddlers based on the five practices that are important to prepare young children for reading. One of the best ways children can learn language and literacy skills is through play, and we are delighted that we can provide quality toys and equipment for our young patrons with the help of a Connecticut Community Foundation grant award,” said Susan Shepherd, outreach coordinator of the Whittemore Library, in a press release.
