NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Board of Education this month approved transferring $1.1 million in health care savings to pay for capital items.

The anticipated surplus funds, which are in the current school budget, stem from retired teachers switching from the district’s health care to the state’s Stirling Insurance Plan, according to school officials.

According to officials, the money will be used for items, such as technology, equipment, and textbooks, which have been prioritized.

“Everything is already on a priority list. We are not making things up,” Superintendent of Schools Sharon Locke said.

Locke said safety concerns are the first issues the district takes into consideration. Once those are taken care of, the district begins to explore how it can benefit the highest number of students.

“We are going to continue to purchase technology to get an equitable distribution. Make sure all of our school have an equal access to technology. So, we are fortunate that our census is down in insurance and we will be able to do that,” Locke said.
