NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck YMCA will be hosting a support group for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender youth or those questioning their sexuality, and their families.

The group will meet for the first time on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the ION Community Room, 270 Church St. Monthly meetings are planned for the third Monday of the month.

Naugatuck YMCA CEO Susan Talbot said over the past year or so she has been approached by parents whose children identify with the LGBT community. The YMCA decided to start the group to offer a non-judgmental environment for children and their families to discuss topics, she said.

“We are situated perfectly to bring the community together in a safe environment,” Talbot said.

Talbot said the only thing the YMCA asks is for young children not to attend.

The group will feature resources, including speakers from the social welfare arena, educators, doctors and lawyers, to assist family members and children. Natasha Provancher, a marriage and family therapist, will be the guest speaker for the first meeting on Monday.
