SEYMOUR — The Naugatuck Valley Health District has a limited number of free radon test kits available to residents of the towns covered by the district, including Beacon Falls and Naugatuck.

The district will be giving out the kits during January, which is Radon Awareness Month.

Health officials estimate that radon is responsible for more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States, a press release stated. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed from the natural decay of uranium and is found in rock, soil and water, according to the release.

Residents can pick up radon test kits at the health district, located at 98 Bank St. in Seymour. For more information and to ensure kits are still available, call the health district at 203-881-3255.
