NAUGATUCK — The Board of Education this month approved the second year of a five-year food services contract with Sodexo.

The contract stipulates that the board has to approve each year of the contract individually. The second year of the deal begins on July 1.

Sodexo runs the cafeteria program in each of the borough’s public schools.

Assistant Business Manager Bernice Rizk said the board doesn’t pay any money to Sodexo because the company is self-sustaining.

Under the contract, Sodexo has guaranteed the board a $20,000 influx of cash into the cafeteria program each year. Rizk said this money will be put towards needed equipment.

Rizk looked into the district running its own food services at the request of a board member. She said it would be difficult for the district to run the cafeteria program at every school and generate a revenue.

“In my research, it is very difficult to run a program and have it be self-sustaining,” Rizk said.
