BEACON FALLS — The town is hoping that higher recycling numbers will lead to lower costs through a new program, “Recycle More, Trash Less.”

Local scouts will deliver a letter from First Selectman Chris Bielik, a recycling guide and a 12-inch weatherproof “RECYCLE” sticker to every home this Saturday while they are dropping off bags for their annual Scouting for Food drive.

The “Recycle More, Trash Less” program is aimed at educating residents on the single-stream recycle program and increasing recycling in town. Officials are asking residents to buy a large trash bin, if they don’t have one already, to put the sticker on. That barrel can be used for single-stream recycling and Winter Brothers will pick it up, as long as it is marked.

Residents currently use small, square bins provided by the town for recycling. Recycling saves the town money, since there is no tipping fee for recycled goods, and officials are hoping to increase the amount residents recycle. The town paid close to $90,000 in tipping fees last year, according to a press release, and had 1,400 tons of trash compared to 375 tons of recycling.
