NAUGATUCK — Officials are preparing for the complete reconstruction of a section of North Main Street.

Public Works Director James Stewart said the section of the street between Curtiss Street and Union Street is scheduled to be overhauled. The work will include removing old trolley tracks, replacing the asphalt, installing new drainage and sidewalks, he said.

The road had sidewalks put in in some places around 10 years ago, Stewart said. This project would ensure the sidewalks stretch along the entire length of road.

A public information meeting on the project is scheduled for Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.

The reconstruction of this portion of the road, which is less than half a mile, is expected to cost $3.6 million.

Stewart said the construction will be paid for by the Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program, which is administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

The borough will have to pay for the design cost, which is expected to be about $100,000, Stewart said. That cost will be offset by $50,000 the borough collected from the Connecticut Water Company, which recently dug up a portion of the street to make upgrades to pipes. The money is in lieu of the company, which did a temporary paving job once the upgrades were complete, paving the road.

If everything goes has planned, Stewart said, construction would likely start in the beginning of summer in 2017 and wrap up by the autumn.

Since the design work hasn’t been completed, Stewart could not say with whether there would be detours during construction. However, he said, there would likely be alternating traffic in both directions on the street during construction.
