PROSPECT — The Region 16 Board of Education decided last week to make a late bus on Tuesdays at Long River Middle School a permanent option for students.

The school, which serves students in grades sixth through eight from Beacon Falls and Prospect, previously offered a late bus only on Thursday afternoons for students who stay after school for extracurricular activities and extra help.

In September, the board offered another late bus on Tuesdays to gauge the usage. Last week, Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin reported that an average of 12 students used the Tuesday late bus over the first three weeks of the trial run. He added a couple of the school’s clubs moved their activities to Tuesdays.

The censuses among the board was to make the late bus, which costs $68 a day, permanent.

The board did a similar trial on Tuesdays in May at Long River following a request from a resident for an additional late bus. The late bus on Tuesdays was minimally used in May, but the board decided to try again because members felt that the timing may not have been a great indicator of use since it was so late in the school year.
