NAUGATUCK — Mr. George P. Passabet, 91, of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 11, 2016 at his home surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Rosemary V. DePerrior; his brother, Joseph V. Passabet; son-in-law, Thomas H. Shields, Jr.; and great-grandson, Eric Thomas Clement.

Mr. Passabet was born on Nov. 22, 1924 in Hawthorne, N.Y., to the late Joseph Vincent and Lucy Frey Passabet. He was a graduate of Pleasantville High School and he attended St. Lawrence University. George graduated in 1947 from St. Michael’s College with a BA in philosophy. Mr. Passabet proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy and he was commissioned an ensign in 1944 from Cornell University. Mr. Passabet played Minor League Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies organization and played locally for various semi-pro and amateur teams.

He retired from Uniroyal after 32 years, where he worked primarily as the superintendent of the fabric shoe mill and the industrial relations manager. He also worked at American Chemical and Refining and Century Brass. George went to work for Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home for 23 years after his retirement.

He served on the board of directors of the Naugatuck Babe Ruth League, YMCA and the American Red Cross. George was also the blood services coordinator for the Red Cross and he was recognized by the state of Connecticut in the year 2000 for being a 22 gallon blood donor. Mr. Passabet also served on the Board of Corporators of Naugatuck Savings Bank. George was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church where he served as president of the Parish Council for many years, and he also volunteered as a CCD teacher.

Mr. Passabet is survived by his two daughters, Jacqueline Shields of Knoxville, Tenn., and Janice Dokla (Carl) of Rindge, N.H.; and his two sons, David Passabet (Ilia) of Quinton, Va., and George Passabet of Naugatuck; his brother, James Passabet of Hawthorne, N.Y., 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Memorial Road, Prospect, where full military honors will also be presented. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 15, 2016 at 9 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Friends and family are asked to please meet directly at the church on Friday morning. George’s burial will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.

The family would like to thank the nurses and aides from All About You Home Care Services and Vitas Healthcare who cared for George in his last days.
