Filing period to open for renters program

NAUGATUCK — The Assessor’s Office will begin accepting applications Tuesday for the elderly renter’s program.

Applications will be taken on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. through Oct. 3 at the office in Town Hall, 229 Church St.

To be eligible for the program, a person or their spouse, if living with him or her, must have been 65 years old or over at the end of last year. The applicant must rent the house, condo or apartment he or she lives in or share rent payment, and must have been a resident of the state for at least one year before filing.

Income limits for the program are $35,200 for a single person and $42,900 for married couples. The income of a married couple must be combined with any social security benefits.

Utility bills, excluding telephone and cable TV bills, must be presented with the application. Applicants must also provide proof of income for 2015 and a statement from the Social Security department with 2015 figures.

Anyone receiving Social Security disability benefits is also entitled to receive benefits, providing they meet the requirements of this program. They do not have to be 65 years old.
