AKRON, Ohio — Philip G. Haas, 72, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016 in Akron after a brief illness.

Phil was born May 8, 1943 in New Britain, Conn., to Mora and Carlton Haas. He was raised by Mora and his stepfather Lawrence Monroe in Naugatuck, Conn., and graduated from Naugatuck High School in 1961. He received his chemical engineering degree from Northeastern University, an MBA from the University of Connecticut, and later earned a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Toledo. Phil married his wife, Diane, in 1965 and they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Phil’s career began with Uniroyal Chemical in Naugatuck. In 1983 he and his family moved to Toledo, Ohio, where Phil began what became a 25-year career with Owens Corning. After retiring in 2008, Phil and Diane moved to Palm Beach, Fla., and spent their summers in Akron. Phil continued to work as a consultant for Trans-Foam Inc. through 2015.

In addition to his work and family, Phil enjoyed walking, golfing, fishing with friends, reading, and traveling. He was an avid UConn basketball and football fan. Phil was a member of the Bath United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; son, Bruce and his partner Phillip Emigh of Chicago; son, Steven and his wife Tina of Akron; granddaughter, Ella; sisters-in-law, Joan Kinnie and Alice Haas, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Steven C. Haas of New York City.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 9 at Bath Church, 3980 W. Bath Road, Akron (Bath), Ohio 44333.
