WATERBURY — A 19-year-old Beacon Falls woman was killed in a five-vehicle accident Wednesday night on Interstate 84 eastbound in Waterbury.

The woman, identified as Casey Lynne Giannone, was a passenger in a car that caught fire as a result of the accident, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the car she was in, Alex Matthew Milosevic, 18, of Bristol, was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital with what police described as serious injuries.

The accident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. near Exit 23. According to police, the accident started when a 2007 Volvo driven by Jasvir Singh, 30, of Marion, Ind., traveling in the center lane hit the rear end an International 4900 trailer truck driven by Mandeng Minor, 35 of Massachusetts. The truck collided with the rear end of a tractor-trailer driven by Winfred Spaulding, 42, of Fairfield, Maine.

Police said the Volvo then swerved into the left lane and hit the rear end of the 2003 Subaru Legacy Milosevic was driving, pushing the Subaru into the rear end of a Toyota Corolla driven by Dominika Tukaj, 33, of Bristol.

After the vehicles had come to a stop, police said, a fire started where the Volvo was resting against the Subaru. Waterbury firefighters responded and put out the fire, police said.

According to police, no one else involved in the accident suffered serious injuries, though Tukaj and Minor were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The highway was closed for seven hours as the scene was cleaned up and police investigated. The cause of  the accident remains under investigation.
