NAUGATUCK — The VFW Post 1946 Auxiliary has maintained a holiday tradition for more than two decades of sending care packages to active military members serving overseas. The auxiliary is in need of donations to help keep the tradition alive.
Dolly Lengyel, president of the auxiliary and owner of Personal Pampering on Church Street, said donations have been slow to come in this year as businesses and people struggle to make ends meet.
Lengyel, who oversees the collection of donations and sending out the care packages, added that there is a misperception that Post 1946 is no longer operational.
The organization closed its headquarters at 239 Rubber Ave. early this year after voting to sell the building. However, members are maintaining the post’s charter to continue operating as a VFW post.
Lengyel said the care packages won’t be mailed until after the holidays this year and donations will be accepted until February.
Lengyel said Girl Scout Troop 64072 of Watertown has donated over 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. The auxiliary is in need of donations of personal hygiene items, including shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, disposal razors and non-aerosol deodorants. Donations of white, knee-high socks and shipping boxes are also needed. Monetary donations will also be accepted to help offset shipping costs.
