NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire broke in a single family home Sunday night.

The department was called to 55 Stone Fence Road at 8:20 p.m. People within the home were cooking on the stove and it appears a fire broke out while they were preparing food, Fire Captain Mike Chatfield said.

Firefighters used one hose line to extinguish the flames, which did not spread beyond the kitchen. The house had significant smoke damage and some water damage, so Chatfield did not believe they would be able to stay in the home Sunday night. He did not anticipate that they would be out of the house for long, though.

The fire marshal was called to the scene and was investigating as of late Sunday.

The house, a 3,128-square-foot raised ranch, is owned by Delores and Melvin Turman, according to Naugatuck land records.
