PROSPECT — A fire tore through an office building on Waterbury Road early Tuesday morning.

The fire destroyed the building at 14 Waterbury Road, which housed MTM Masonry and Chimney and Golden Wok, a Chinese restaurant.

The fire was called in at about 5 a.m. by Mayor Robert Chatfield.

Chatfield said he was at the Dunkin Donuts across the street shortly before 5 a.m. when he heard glass break. He glanced over to the parking lot of St. Anthony’s Church to check if someone was breaking the window of a car when he noticed smoke.

Chatfield, who has served with the Volunteer Fire Department of Prospect for decades, called in the fire and went across the street for a closer look. He said the flames were shooting out of the right side of the building, where MTM Masonry and Chimney is located, and there were live wires on the ground.

Waterbury Road, or Route 69, was closed from about 5 to 7 a.m. as firefighters put out the blaze. The building sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported.

As of 8:30 a.m. firefighters were still on the scene. There is no word yet as to the cause of fire.
