NAUGATUCK — William D. Swanson of Avon, formerly of Naugatuck, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, in Avon.

Bill was born in Naugatuck on July 19, 1946 to William and Myrtle Swanson. He graduated from Laurel Crest Academy in Bristol and from Northland College in Ashland, Wis. Bill worked for many years in shipping and receiving at Ames Department Store and later at Griffin Hospital.

Bill is survived by his sister, Karen, and her husband, Joseph Oakes, of Mesa, Ariz., and Aurora, Colo.; a nephew, Matthew Oakes, his wife, Eva, and their two children, Emma and Henrik of Denver, Colo.; a niece, Jennifer Holland, her husband, Delmar, and their two children, Trey and Jordan of Mesa, Ariz. He is also survived by two dear friends, David and Karen Schiek, of Canton.

Bill was a devoted fan of the UConn women’s basketball team and although he was never able to attend a game, he followed them faithfully on TV and in the newspaper. He loved to talk about “the girls.” Bill will be missed by his family and friends.

A graveside service will take place at the convenience of the family in Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck is assisting the family with the arrangements.
