PROSPECT — The abatement and demolition of Algonquin School is slated to start July 6.

The school at 30 Coer Road was closed after the 2014-15 school year ended. All elementary students in Prospect who attended Algonquin and Community schools will attend the new Prospect Elementary School in the fall.

A new district office for Region 16, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, will be built on the Algonquin School site. The school, with the exception of the annex, will be demolished to make way for the new office. Standard Demolition Services of Trumbull was awarded a $660,000 contract for the demolition and abatement of the school.

Demolition is expected to be finished by the middle of August, Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin said.

Administrators from other schools in the district went through Algonquin to mark items that can be taken and used in their schools. Also, officials from Beacon Falls and Prospect were offered the opportunity to go through the school and tag anything they wanted. Anything left in the school will be donated to charitable organizations.

The new district office is the final, and smallest, piece of the building project that includes the new Prospect Elementary School and renovations to Laurel Ledge Elementary School in Beacon Falls. Voters approved bonding up to $47.5 million for the entire project in December 2011.
